For many years Patras languished, playing second fiddle to the port of Piraeus. Now, with its new port, Patras has gained the title of Greece's "Gateway to the West." Patras ferry port has become in the last decade a central port for communication with Italy, via the islands of the Ionian.

From Kifissos coach station in Athens there is a coach every half an hour to Patras, and the journey takes 3 hours.
